EDI Policy

Enable Research is committed to equality, diversity and inclusion in everything we publish and in how we operate. We believe that high-quality research and analysis must reflect the full breadth of Irish society, and that our work is strengthened when it considers diverse perspectives, experiences and communities.

This policy outlines the principles that guide our approach to equality, diversity and inclusion across our editorial output and organisational practices.

Inclusive Research and Analysis

The issues we cover – transport, energy, sustainability, technology and active travel – affect all communities in Ireland, though not equally. Infrastructure investment, environmental policy and technological change create different outcomes for different groups depending on geography, income, age, disability, ethnicity and other factors.

We are committed to reflecting these different experiences and outcomes in our analysis. When we examine a national policy or infrastructure project, we consider its impact across communities rather than presenting a single aggregate picture. Where data allows, we disaggregate our analysis to highlight how outcomes vary for different groups.

We avoid assumptions about who our readers are. Our content is written to be accessible and relevant to researchers, policymakers, students, community organisations and members of the public regardless of background.

Language and Representation

Enable Research uses inclusive, respectful language across all published content. We follow current best practice on terminology relating to disability, ethnicity, gender identity, nationality and other characteristics, and we update our language as conventions evolve.

We do not use language that stereotypes, marginalises or excludes any group. Where we discuss communities or populations, we prioritise the terminology preferred by those communities themselves rather than outdated or externally imposed labels.

When using images or visual content, we aim to represent the diversity of Irish society accurately and avoid reinforcing stereotypes or narrow representations of any group.

Accessibility

We recognise that diversity and inclusion extend to how people access and interact with our content. Our commitment to accessibility is set out in full in our Accessibility Statement, but in summary we aim to ensure that all readers, including those using assistive technologies, can access and navigate our content without barriers.

Data and Evidence

We acknowledge that data collection and publication practices can themselves contain biases. Where official statistics or research data do not adequately capture the experiences of particular communities, we note these gaps rather than presenting incomplete data as the full picture.

We are committed to using evidence from a wide range of sources including community organisations, advocacy groups and academic research that centres the experiences of underrepresented populations, alongside official government statistics and institutional data.

Continuous Improvement

Equality, diversity and inclusion are not static goals. We regularly review our content, our practices and our policies to identify areas where we can improve. We welcome feedback from readers and communities on how we can better reflect the diversity of experiences and perspectives across Ireland.
